Pandas Play At Boarding School

The first ever Panda Boarding School has been set up in China. The 16 Giant Panda cubs there have a wooden playground, complete with swings and slides, and like to wrestle each other. It is hoped that half of cubs will eventually be released into the wild.

Panda Release

In April, Xiang Xiang the Giant Panda became the first captive bred Panda to be released into the wild. The Four year old Panda was fitted with a global positioning system (GPS) to monitor his activities. Xiang Xiang will be monitored until 2008 when it is hoped he will have became a "Real wild Panda".

Giant Panda Rescue

An injured Panda was recently rescued in North-Central China after a fall from a mountain in the Heihe Forest Park.
The Panda was found by a group of tourists who informed staff at the Park. The Staff then managed to rescue the female Panda and take her to a nearby Wild Animal rescue centre. Luckily the Panda had no serious injuries.

Panda Birthdays

Tai Shan, a Giant Panda cub celebrated his 1st Birthday on the 9th July at Washington Zoo.

 

Giant Panda Facts

  • Giant Pandas have mainly white fur with black fur on their eyes, ears, arms and legs.
  • Giant Pandas mainly eat bamboo and their natural habitat is in mountains in China, where bamboo grows.
  • There are as few as 1600 Giant Pandas living in the wild.
  • 120 Giant Pandas live in zoos but they are mostly in China and there are none in the UK.
  • Giant Pandas are endangered because their habitat has been reduced by man. They are also threatened by poaching and illegal hunting.
